Week 521. Year 11. Tommy is 43. A quiet spring week. Work, school, dinner. The ordinary machinery of a family that has been running for 11 years of documented life and longer before that. The food was simple — crawfish boil — and the simple was enough and the enough was everything.
Made crawfish boil this week — the kind of food that fills the house with the smell of Louisiana and the knowledge that whoever walks through the door is walking into a home where the stove is on and the food is ready and the welcome is unconditional. The meal was the day. The day was the meal. Both were good. Always enough.
When the crawfish pot is doing all the work, the best thing you can make is something cold and simple to hand people the moment they walk through the door — and that’s exactly where this Special Lemonade earns its place. Week 521 didn’t need anything fancy alongside the boil; it needed something that matched the mood: steady, generous, and just a little brighter than ordinary. This is that drink.
Special Lemonade
Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 5 min | Total Time: 15 min | Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water (for simple syrup)
- 1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 6–8 lemons)
- 4 cups cold water
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 oranges)
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
- Ice, for serving
- Lemon and orange slices, for garnish
- Fresh mint sprigs, optional
Instructions
- Make the simple syrup. Combine sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar fully dissolves, about 3–5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
- Juice the citrus. Squeeze lemons, oranges, and limes. Strain out seeds and pulp if desired.
- Combine. In a large pitcher, stir together the lemon juice, orange juice, lime juice, and cooled simple syrup.
- Add water and adjust. Pour in 4 cups cold water and stir well. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness by adding a little more syrup or lemon juice as needed.
- Chill and serve. Refrigerate until cold, at least 30 minutes, or serve immediately over plenty of ice. Garnish with citrus slices and fresh mint if using.
