Week 533. Summer 2026. I am 43 years old and standing in my kitchen — the Bench house kitchen, the one that held cancer and divorce and cinnamon rolls — and the stove is on and something is cooking and the house smells like grilled food and garden herbs and this is my life. This is the life I built.
The clinic was busy this week — spring puppies and summer emergencies and the constant, comforting cycle of animals who need care and humans who love them enough to bring them in.
Mason is 15 and navigating high school with the quiet competence that has always been his way — focused, kind, certain of who he is in a way that took me thirty years to achieve.
Lily is 13 and competing in equestrian events and winning with the Dawson stubbornness that I recognize because it's mine.
I made garden ratatouille this week. The food continues. The food always continues. It is the thread that connects every week to every other week, every year to every other year, every version of me to every other version — the woman on the kitchen floor, the woman at the chemo recliner, the woman at the grill, the woman at the outdoor table under the string lights. All of them, connected by the food they made with their hands. All of them, me.
I said I made ratatouille this week, and I did — but what I keep coming back to is this side dish I threw together alongside it, rooted in the same impulse: use what the garden gives you, add heat, add salt, let the vegetables be themselves. These Sicilian Brussels Sprouts have that same quality — bold and honest, nothing hidden. After a week of spring puppies and equestrian ribbons and the ordinary miracle of my children becoming who they are, I needed food that tasted like it meant something without trying too hard. This was it.
Sicilian Brussels Sprouts
Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 25 min | Total Time: 35 min | Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup golden raisins
- 1/4 cup pine nuts
- 2 tablespoons capers, drained
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Season the sprouts. Toss the halved Brussels sprouts with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated. Spread cut-side down in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
- Roast. Roast for 20–25 minutes, until the cut sides are deeply caramelized and the outer leaves are crisp. Do not stir during the first 15 minutes so the sprouts develop a good sear.
- Build the Sicilian mixture. About 5 minutes before the sprouts are done, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic slices and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until golden. Add the pine nuts and toast for another minute. Stir in the raisins, capers, and red pepper flakes and cook 1 more minute until the raisins are plump.
- Finish. Remove the Brussels sprouts from the oven and transfer to a serving dish. Spoon the Sicilian mixture over the top and drizzle with the red wine vinegar. Toss gently to combine.
- Serve. Scatter the fresh parsley over the top and serve immediately, warm or at room temperature.
