Super Bowl. Third annual gathering. This year: all seven of us (the six plus Curtis) at the townhouse. The spread has become legendary in our small circle: wings (three flavors this year — honey garlic, buffalo, jerk), jalapeño poppers, buffalo chicken dip, Claudette's jerk chicken sliders, a cheese board (Curtis still ignores it; the cheese board persists), and Marcus's contribution: nachos, made from scratch with his own seasoned beef and a queso he developed himself. My son makes queso. From scratch. The boy who asked for cereal at 5:47 AM four years ago now makes queso from scratch. This is growth. This is the kitchen working.
Derek and Curtis watched the game in their usual formation: side by side, quiet, bonded by shared disappointment in referees. Isaiah watched with them — THREE quiet men on one couch. The testosterone-to-silence ratio was extraordinary. Jasmine and Zoe made friendship bracelets in the bedroom. Marcus kept score and commentary like a sportscaster. Vanessa and Brian came for the second half. The house was full. The food was hot. The game was irrelevant. The people were the point.
Three flavors of wings has become our non-negotiable — the spread doesn’t work without variety, and everyone at the table has a preference. If you’re building out your own game day rotation, these Jack Daniels Glazed Baked Chicken Wings are the kind of thing that earns a permanent slot: sticky, a little smoky, oven-friendly so you’re not standing over a fryer while trying to watch the second half. Marcus would approve. The queso is his domain; the wings are everybody’s business.
Jack Daniels Glazed Baked Chicken Wings
Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 50 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes | Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 3 lbs chicken wings, split at the joint, tips removed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup Jack Daniels whiskey
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prep. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top. Pat the chicken wings very dry with paper towels — this is the key to crispiness.
- Season the wings. In a large bowl, toss the wings with olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.
- Bake the wings. Arrange the wings in a single layer on the wire rack. Bake for 45–50 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the skin is golden and crispy.
- Make the glaze. While the wings bake, combine the Jack Daniels, brown sugar, soy sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat and simmer 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened to a syrupy glaze. Remove from heat.
- Glaze and finish. When the wings come out of the oven, transfer them to a large bowl. Pour about 3/4 of the glaze over the wings and toss to coat. Return wings to the rack and bake an additional 5 minutes to set the glaze. Brush or drizzle remaining glaze over the top before serving.
- Serve. Plate immediately. Garnish with sliced scallions or sesame seeds if desired. Serve alongside your full game day spread.
