Iced Honeydew Mint Tea — The Drink We Pour When Words Aren’t Needed

Luis and I sat on the porch after dinner. The evening sky over El Paso turned from gold to purple. The desert exhaled. We held hands. We didn't speak. The not-speaking is the conversation we have perfected over three decades of marriage: everything said without saying anything. The porch is our dialect.

On evenings like that one — the sky shifting from gold to purple over the desert — I always pour us something cold before we settle into the porch chairs. This iced honeydew mint tea has become as much a part of our summer rhythm as the silence Luis and I have learned to share. The honeydew is everything the desert isn’t: cool, soft, almost impossibly green. I blend a pitcher on hot afternoons and it waits for us in the refrigerator like a small kindness we give ourselves at the end of the day.

Iced Honeydew Mint Tea

Prep Time: 15 min | Cook Time: 5 min | Total Time: 2 hr 20 min (includes chilling) | Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 4 cups honeydew melon, cubed (about 1/2 medium melon)
  • 4 cups water, divided
  • 4 green tea bags
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
  • 3 tablespoons honey, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • Ice, for serving
  • Thin honeydew slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew the tea. Bring 2 cups of water to a gentle simmer (about 175°F — do not boil). Steep green tea bags and mint leaves together for 4 minutes, then remove and discard. Stir in honey while the tea is still warm until fully dissolved.
  2. Blend the honeydew. Place honeydew cubes in a blender with the remaining 2 cups of cold water. Blend on high until completely smooth, about 60 seconds.
  3. Strain. Pour the blended honeydew through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher, pressing gently with a spoon to extract all the juice. Discard the solids.
  4. Combine. Add the cooled mint-green tea and lime juice to the pitcher with the honeydew juice. Stir well to combine.
  5. Chill. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours until thoroughly cold. Stir again before serving.
  6. Serve. Pour over ice in tall glasses. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs and a thin slice of honeydew on the rim if desired.
