November. Jake Kowalski is twenty-six years old. My birthday was the 22nd — Thanksgiving week, which means my birthday dinner was Thanksgiving dinner, which means I shared my birthday with a turkey and thirty-seven side dishes and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The second joint Kowalski-O'Brien Thanksgiving. Hosted at Tom and Linda's again because it has the biggest dining room, though "biggest" is relative when you're fitting twelve people around a table built for eight. Patrick brought Jameson again — this is now tradition. Tom brought out a beer I brewed specifically for Thanksgiving: a harvest ale with local honey that's amber and smooth and tastes like gratitude. Patrick tried it and said, "That's proper." From an Irish firefighter, "proper" is the highest available praise.
I made the pierogi (as always), the mashed potatoes (as always), the mushroom soup (as always — it's close enough to Thanksgiving to count as holiday soup), and a new addition: a cranberry sauce from scratch. Fresh cranberries, orange zest, sugar, simmered until the berries burst. It's simple and it's a million times better than the canned stuff. Megan looked at the can of Ocean Spray that Linda had bought as backup and said, "We won't be needing that." Linda was offended for approximately three seconds and then tried the fresh sauce and agreed.
After dinner, Megan and I sat on the porch. It was cold. She had my jacket around her shoulders. She said, "Happy birthday, pierogi guy." I said, "Happy Thanksgiving, nacho girl." She said, "This is my favorite holiday." I said, "Because of the food?" She said, "Because of the people." She leaned her head on my shoulder and we watched the neighborhood settle into the dark and I thought, twenty-six is pretty good. Twenty-six with Megan is the best year yet.
That cranberry sauce taught me something I keep coming back to: fresh and simple will always beat whatever comes out of a can. This Fruit Cup with Citrus Sauce lives in that same philosophy—bright citrus, real fruit, no shortcuts. It’s the kind of dish that earns its place on a crowded Thanksgiving table, and if Megan’s watching, another reason to leave the store-bought stuff in the pantry.
Fruit Cup with Citrus Sauce
Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 5 minutes | Total Time: 20 minutes | Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 2 kiwis, peeled and diced
- 1 cup seedless grapes, halved
- 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
- 1 large navel orange, peeled and segmented
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Fresh mint leaves, for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the fruit. Wash and cut all fruit as directed. Combine strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, grapes, pineapple, and orange segments in a large bowl. Toss gently to mix.
- Make the citrus sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the orange juice, lemon juice, honey, and orange zest. Stir until the honey dissolves and the mixture just begins to simmer, about 3–5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool for 5 minutes.
- Combine. Pour the citrus sauce over the prepared fruit and toss gently to coat evenly.
- Chill and serve. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld. Spoon into individual cups or bowls and garnish with fresh mint leaves before serving.
