Summer 2027. Sofia turns twenty on July 2. Twenty — no longer a teenager, a full adult, a woman who has been running a bakery for eight years and is now in her second year as named partner and who oversees both locations with the calm authority of someone who was born for this the way Diego was born for bridges and Camila was born for stages. Her birthday was celebrated at the bakery, where else — a simple vanilla cake, the tradition she chose at fifteen and has maintained because simple is enough when you know who you are. She said: "Twenty. Not bad for someone who never went to college." I said: "You went to the only college that matters." She said: "The University of Rosa." The University of Rosa. She named it. The university that has produced one graduate (Sofia) and will produce more (Lupita, whoever comes next), and the curriculum is flour and stubbornness and 4 AM.
Diego is finishing his freshman year at UTEP — 4.0, naturally, the Gutierrez academic standard that Isabella set and that Diego maintains because maintaining standards is what engineers do. He has declared his major: civil engineering with a focus on border infrastructure. He told me: "I want to design the things that connect the two sides." The two sides. The same two sides that I crossed thirty years ago, and Diego wants to connect them with concrete and steel instead of flour and recipes, and the connecting is the same, and the same is the family business, which is not bakeries but bridges, not bread but connection, and the connection is everything.
Camila's chorus concert was in June — the summer concert at the Abraham Chavez Theatre, and this year Camila had a solo. A real solo. Her first solo with the chorus. She sang "Pie Jesu" — a Latin sacred song that requires a voice of purity and control, and Camila's voice delivered both, the purity of a thirteen-year-old mezzo-soprano and the control of three years of training, and the theater was silent, and the silence was the fifteen hundred people holding their breath, and the breath-holding was the concert, and the concert was Camila, alone on stage, singing in a language she doesn't speak but that her voice understands perfectly.
I made elotes for the Fourth of July — year thirteen. The tradition that is now a teenager, appropriately, because the tradition is growing the way Camila is growing, with expanding range and deepening flavor and the particular maturity that comes from thirteen years of doing the same thing and each year finding something new in the sameness.
Sofia’s choice of vanilla — year after year, simple and unshakeable — has always reminded me that the clearest flavors carry the most weight. After her birthday at the bakery and the elotes on the Fourth and Camila’s voice ringing through that theater, I wanted something quiet to end the summer with: something warm, vanilla-sweet, made by hand. This French Vanilla Cappuccino Mix is exactly that — a make-ahead jar of comfort you can give as a gift or keep on your own shelf for the mornings when the milestone feelings are still settling.
