July 2031. Forty-four years old. The birthday was the fullest it had been in years—Kai home from Vermont for the summer, Hannah and Thomas with Wren who was turning four in August, Caleb and River, Lily and Ben up from Norman. Madison drove out with her mother. The Stilwell bean woman came, which she'd been doing for a couple of years now at various gatherings. Art came with his wife.
The birthday felt different with the pipeline gone—more spacious, as if the life had exhaled and found more room in it. I noticed all the people around the table more fully than I'd been able to in years when I was always managing the gap between what I wanted to give and what I had capacity for.
Kai made a point of telling me—privately, before things got busy—that he was proud of me for making the decision about the pipeline when I did. He said he'd been watching me manage the balance for several years and that it had seemed like it was compressing something. I said it was. He said: now it's not. He said that simply, as a matter of fact, and went back into the kitchen to check on the peach cake. Hannah had finally passed the recipe to him formally and he was its keeper now as well.
The peach cake was right. The land was right. The table was full. Forty-four years old on July 4th, 1987-whatever-this-is. A person built by people who built things for the next generation. Trying to do the same.
The cake Kai made that afternoon was the one Hannah had finally handed over to him—her peach cake, now his to carry. It’s built for a summer table, for the kind of day where the light is right and the people around you are fully present. If you want to make it yourself, here’s the version we come back to every time: a classic bundt, golden and fragrant, the kind of thing that makes a birthday feel like it actually landed.

Prep Time: 20 min | Cook Time: 55 min | Total Time: 1 hr 15 min | Servings: 12
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups fresh or canned peaches, peeled and diced (drained if canned)
- 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting, or a simple vanilla glaze
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare. Heat your oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan thoroughly, making sure to coat all the ridges.
- Combine dry ingredients. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt until evenly mixed.
- Add wet ingredients. Add the beaten eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined—the batter will be thick.
- Fold in peaches. Gently fold in the diced peaches and nuts if using. Do not overmix; you want the fruit distributed evenly without breaking it down.
- Bake. Pour the batter into the prepared bundt pan and spread evenly. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top is deep golden brown.
- Cool and turn out. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then carefully invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Finish and serve. Dust with powdered sugar just before serving, or drizzle with a simple glaze of 1 cup powdered sugar whisked with 2 tablespoons milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
