Back-to-school shopping week. Lucas is starting first grade on Monday. Isabella is starting pre-K. Mateo is too young for school but is in the two-days-a-week childcare Jenny has been using so she can get a few hours of quiet. Their house is a supply-stocked explosion. Jenny bought too many folders. Miguel Jr. bought the wrong kind of pencils. Lucas has opinions about backpacks.
I took Lucas shopping Saturday. Just the two of us. Jenny had a migraine and I volunteered to take him for school supplies. Target, Dollar Tree, the Puerto Rican bodega for a Spanish-English dictionary — he is in the bilingual program and I insisted. He chose a backpack with a dinosaur on it for the second year running. He chose folders in alternating pink and blue because, he informed me, "I do not have to pick one color." He chose crayons specifically the sixty-four-count, because "that is the one that has the brown I like for skin color." I did not realize Lucas had been thinking about skin color in crayons. I should have asked. I asked. He said, "Abuela, I draw people. I need the color." He has been drawing people for two years. The people in his drawings are all brown. They are Delgado-shaped. I asked, "Who do you draw?" He said, "You. Papi. Mami. Abuelo. Everyone." Wepa.
Afterward I took him for tostones at a little kiosk on Park Street. We ate them standing up outside. He said, "Abuela, these are as good as yours." I said, "Mijo, these are not as good as mine." He said, "A little less." I said, "A lot less." He said, "Fine, a lot less." Fair.
Mami this week had three good days and two hard ones. Thursday she called me Mamá twice. Her own mother's name for her from Abuela Consuelo. I did not correct her. I am not Mamá. But close enough.
Food bank Monday and Thursday. Monday was sopa de pollo again. Thursday was ropa vieja. Esther and Terrence were both there both days. Amara the young mother came Thursday with her toddler and I packed her four containers to go. Amelia pulled me aside Thursday afternoon and said, "Carmen, we have enough extra this week. Take some home." I said, "Amelia, I do not eat the food bank food." She said, "It is your food. You made it. It is also available." I thought about it. I took a container of the ropa vieja home. Eduardo ate it. He said, "It is not your Tuesday ropa vieja." I said, "I know. Volume matters." Wepa.
The tostones on Park Street belong to Lucas and me now — our thing, our standing-outside moment — and I am not trying to replace them with anything. But that Saturday got me thinking about what I send home with the grandchildren, what I put in their hands at the end of a good day together, and how even something small can say I was thinking about you. This snack mix is exactly that: fast, festive, something a six-year-old will absolutely eat too much of, and easy enough that Lucas and I could make it together the next time he comes over while his mami rests and his new dinosaur backpack waits by the door.
Candy Corn Snack Mix
Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 0 minutes | Total Time: 5 minutes | Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups candy corn
- 1 cup dry-roasted peanuts
- 1 cup mini pretzel twists
- 1 cup popped popcorn (lightly salted)
- 1/2 cup candy-coated chocolate pieces (such as M&Ms)
- 1/2 cup golden raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Gather your bowl. Use a large mixing bowl — this mix comes together fast and you want room to stir without losing pieces over the side.
- Combine the dry ingredients. Add the candy corn, peanuts, pretzel twists, popcorn, chocolate pieces, and raisins (if using) to the bowl.
- Stir gently. Use a large spoon or clean hands to toss everything together until evenly mixed. Do not stir too hard or the popcorn will crush.
- Portion and serve. Scoop into small cups, paper bags, or a large serving bowl. For kids, individual cups keep portions manageable and make it feel like a special treat.
- Store. Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container or zip-top bag. Best within 3 days before the popcorn softens.
