Fourth of July. Year three. The tradition is locked in now: cookout at Mama's, the whole family, hot dogs and steaks (Darren's), my cornbread, Mama's potato salad, Crystal's cobbler. The cast of characters is the same but the energy is different this year because the wedding is five weeks away and Amber is vibrating at a frequency that only dogs and maid-of-honor sisters can detect.
The cookout was beautiful. Kevin manned the grill with Darren. Crystal held baby Sean — wait, no. Crystal doesn't have a baby yet. Sean comes later, in 2032. I'm getting ahead of the story. Crystal sat with Mama and they talked about flowers, because Crystal is planning her own wedding for next spring and Mama is the self-appointed flower consultant for all Mitchell weddings despite knowing nothing about flowers except that they should be "not too expensive."
Chloe and Jayden ran around the yard until they were soaked in sweat and sprinkler water. Jayden wore his fire helmet the entire day, including during the fireworks, which he watched from Kevin's lap while chanting "BOOM! BOOM!" at every explosion. Chloe watched the fireworks lying on the grass, looking up, and said, "They're painting the sky again, Mama." She said that last year. She's making it a tradition — the watching and the naming. My daughter names what she sees. It's a gift.
I made the flag cake. Year three. Same recipe. Different woman. The flag is getting better — the stripes are straighter, the blueberry corner is neater. I'm improving at flag cakes the way I'm improving at everything: slowly, with practice, one July at a time.
After the cookout, Amber pulled me aside and said, "I'm getting married in five weeks." Like it just hit her. I said, "I know." She said, "I'm marrying Darren." I said, "I know." She said, "What if I cry the whole time?" I said, "Then you'll cry the whole time, and it'll be beautiful, and Mama will cry too, and I'll cry, and Darren will cry, and the whole barn will be sobbing and eating cake and that's a wedding." She laughed. She squeezed my hand. Five weeks.
The flag cake is the heart of our July Fourth table, and it’s the blueberries that make it feel like the holiday—that deep, jammy blue tucked into the corner like a secret the summer keeps. If you’re building your own cookout tradition and want to let the blueberries take center stage this year, this classic blueberry pie is the place to start. Same family energy, same front-porch spirit—just the blueberries, doing what they do best.
Blueberry Pie
Prep Time: 30 min | Cook Time: 55 min | Total Time: 1 hr 25 min | Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 2 unbaked 9-inch pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
- 6 cups fresh blueberries, rinsed and dried
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven. Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and place a foil-lined baking sheet on it to catch any drips.
- Prepare the bottom crust. Fit one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, pressing it gently into the edges. Trim any overhang to about 1/2 inch and refrigerate while you make the filling.
- Make the filling. In a large bowl, combine the blueberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon, and salt. Toss gently until the berries are evenly coated. Let sit for 10 minutes.
- Fill the pie. Pour the blueberry filling into the chilled crust and spread evenly. Dot the top with the small pieces of butter.
- Add the top crust. Drape the second crust over the filling. Trim, fold, and crimp the edges to seal. Cut 4–5 small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Brush the entire top with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake. Place the pie on the preheated baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F and continue baking for 35 minutes, until the crust is deep golden brown and the filling is bubbling through the slits.
- Cool completely. Transfer the pie to a wire rack and cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. This allows the filling to set so it slices cleanly.
