New Year's Day 2020. The turn of the decade. I am not superstitious about numbers but I am aware of them, the way a woman who has lived fifty-four years is aware of the accumulation — each year a layer, each decade a chapter, and the turning from the tens to the twenties feels like the turning of a page in a book I did not know I was writing until I was already deep into the story.
We spent New Year's Eve at home — me, Eduardo, Sofía, and Mami, who fell asleep at nine and did not pretend to be sorry about it. Eduardo and I watched the ball drop on television with the particular detachment of people who have watched the ball drop thirty-one times together and for whom the spectacle is less about the countdown and more about the fact that they are still here, still together, still on this couch, still sharing a blanket that is too small for two people but that neither of them will replace because the smallness is the point.
Sofía stayed up until one, which she announced as an achievement. I said, When I was your age I danced until three on New Year's. She said, Mami, when you were my age you were in Bayamón and it was seventy-five degrees. I said, Correct. Hartford is not Bayamón. This is not news. She laughed. I love her laugh. It sounds like Mami's laugh used to sound before the fog, before the forgetting, before the laugh became something quieter and less certain.
On New Year's Day I made arroz con salchichas — rice with Vienna sausages — which is not a fancy dish, which is not a dinner-party dish, which is the simplest thing I cook and the thing that tastes most like January 1st in Bayamón, where Mami made it every New Year's Day because the house was full of leftover everything and the one thing nobody had leftover energy for was ambition, so she made the simplest thing and the simplest thing was perfect. I made it for Eduardo and Sofía and brought a container to Mami's apartment, and Mami ate it and said nothing, and the nothing was not fog this time — the nothing was recognition, the nothing was a woman tasting something she made fifty years ago and knowing it without words and the knowing was enough.
Mami’s arroz con salchichas taught me that the humblest ingredients — a can of Vienna sausages, rice, sof’rito, and whatever is in the pantry — are sometimes the ones that do the most important work. When people ask me for a recipe that honors that same spirit, I reach for these Bandito Chili Dogs: sausages at the center, everything else built simply around them, no pretense and no apology. It’s the kind of dish Mami would have recognized the moment it hit the table — not because she’d made it before, but because she would have understood exactly what it was saying.
Bandito Chili Dogs
Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 20 min | Total Time: 30 min | Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 8 hot dog buns, split
- 8 beef hot dogs or frankfurters
- 1 can (15 oz) chili with beans
- 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup finely diced white onion
- 1/4 cup pickled jalapeño slices
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Warm the chili. Pour the canned chili into a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally and heat until warmed through, about 8–10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook the hot dogs. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the hot dogs and cook, turning occasionally, until heated through and lightly browned on all sides, about 5–6 minutes.
- Toast the buns. Place the buns cut-side down in the same skillet for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden. Watch closely so they don’t over-toast.
- Assemble. Nestle a hot dog into each toasted bun. Spoon a generous 2–3 tablespoons of warm chili over each dog. Top with shredded cheddar, diced onion, jalapeño slices, and a drizzle of mustard.
- Serve immediately. These are best eaten right away, while the chili is hot and the buns still have their toasted warmth. Set out extra toppings on the side so everyone can build their own.
