Amber has a full-time paid position at the shelter for the summer — she is doing crisis line coverage plus case management shadowing. Coming home exhausted most nights. Gayle is her best listener. They sit in the sunroom for an hour some evenings.

Tyler is at the Freightliner dealership. Full days, good pay.

Justin at JBS. He has been there six months. He has money in the bank. He has muscle. He is quiet.

Josie has theater camp again. She is now an assistant director role in the youth program. She is 14 and running things. She will start at GISH in August.

Gayle had a tired Thursday. Recovered Friday.

Sunday dinner: grilled burgers, potato salad, watermelon. Outdoor meal. Gayle stayed inside with her oxygen. We opened the windows. She waved at us through the glass.

These Baked Ham and Cheese Sliders are exactly that — warm, simple, a little indulgent, and easy enough to pull off even on the weeks when the heat index pushes 100 and nobody has anything left to give.

Baked Ham and Cheese Sliders

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes | Servings: 12 sliders

Ingredients

  • 12 Hawaiian rolls or slider buns, kept connected as a sheet
  • 3/4 lb deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese (or provolone)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven. Heat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray or butter.
  2. Slice the rolls. Without separating the individual rolls, use a serrated knife to slice the entire sheet of rolls in half horizontally, creating one large top and one large bottom.
  3. Layer the filling. Place the bottom half of the rolls into the prepared baking dish. Layer the ham evenly across the bottom, then lay the cheese slices over the ham. Place the top half of the rolls back on.
  4. Make the butter glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until combined. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Brush and top. Spoon or brush the butter glaze generously over the tops of the rolls, letting it soak into the seams. Sprinkle poppy seeds over the top if using.
  6. Cover and bake. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 4–5 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  7. Slice and serve. Remove from the oven and let rest for 2 minutes. Use a sharp knife to cut along the roll lines and serve warm.
